Word on the Street: African Women Share Their Reproductive Health Stories
Young women in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) are disproportionately impacted by HIV, other STIs, and unintended pregnancy and are among the most underserved populations for sexual and reproductive health (SRH) in the world. However, epidemiological data alone tell an incomplete story. This mapping tool captures authentic narratives from interviews with 49 adolescent girls and young women (AGYW), key influencers (grandmothers and male partners), and technical experts in South Africa, Uganda, and Zimbabwe. By centering the voices and lived experiences of these stakeholders on an immersive platform, it serves as an advocacy tool for the meaningful inclusion of the needs of the most marginalized in the development of SRH prevention products, particularly multipurpose prevention technologies (MPTs) – products designed to simultaneously prevent HIV, other STIs, and/or unintended pregnancy.
Word on the Street was made possible with the generous support from the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, through USAID, under Envision FP‘s PROMISE Collaboration.
