Word on the Street: Women Share Their Reproductive Health Stories

Word on the Street: Women Share Their Reproductive Health Stories

View the full Word on the Street collection featuring Word on the Street: South Africa (2022) and Word on the Street: Kenya (2023).

HIV, other sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and unmet need for contraception are significant health risks for women globally. Adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) are disproportionately affected by these interlinked risks, as are women in many other regions of the world.

However, data alone tell an incomplete story. Word on the Street is a collection of interactive StoryMaps that bring the reproductive health data to life through digital storytelling.  These StoryMaps amplify the voices of women around their reproductive health concerns, desires, and quality of life. These StoryMaps emphasize the game-changing potential of multipurpose prevention technologies (MPTs) to improve the health of women & their communities in SSA.

Word on the Street was built in collaboration between CAMI Health, partners in SSA and the US using Esri’s ArcGIS platform. Filming was conducted in South Africa and Kenya in areas identified as “hotspots” for multipurpose prevention technologies (MPTs) based on the MPT Target Population Mapping Tool, created by CAMI Health. Hotspots are the sub-national areas in SSA where the total addressable market for contraception (TAMC) and high HIV prevalence overlap.

Word on the Street: South Africa reflects stories collected from Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town in South Africa, Kampala in Uganda, and Harare in Zimbabwe and documented as part of a collaboration between CAMI Health, Wits RHI, and FHI 360. It was made possible by the generous support of the American people through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) through the terms of cooperative agreement AID-OAA-A-15-00045.

Word on the Street: Kenya reflects stories collected from Kisumu and Nairobi in Kenya and documented as part of a collaboration between CAMI Health, KEMRI, and Union Movie Works supported by a ViiV Healthcare Positive Action Programme grant.
