The IMPT Secretariat thinks critically on an ongoing basis about the best way forward for the broader MPT field, as well as how the IMPT’s activities may directly support the field’s growth. The MPT field has rapidly evolved since its launch in 2009, and strategies supportive of its progression are thus necessarily iterative.

Towards strategic planning for the MPT field as a whole, the IMPT Secretariat has developed a range of recommendations in consultation with key advisors.

  • In 2013 and 2014, the IMPT Secretariat conducted stakeholder surveys to inform strategic priorities for the MPT development pipeline and identify gaps. The 2014 summary report may be found here.
  • In 2015, the IMPT Secretariat conducted a stakeholder survey to identify emerging priority issues and challenges to help inform the MPT field and next steps for the IMPT for 2015 – 2017. Read the summary brief. Identified priorities for the MPT field included:
    • Social-behavioral and commercialization contexts
    • Hormonal contraception knowledge gaps
    • MPT clinical trial design
    • Development pathway for non-HIV STI MPTs
    • MPT impact and cost-effectiveness modelling efforts
  • In 2017, the IMPT Secretariat initiated the development of a field-wide Strategic Action Framework that will aim to move beyond ‘what’ the priorities and gaps are in the MPT field to describe the ‘who’ and the ‘how’ of addressing these priorities and gaps. This framework will build off previous work to identify priority issues for stakeholders in the MPT field to create a relevant strategy through 2021. Stay tuned for more developments!
