Probiotics: The Potential for a Live Microbicide

Probiotics: The Potential for a Live Microbicide

This symposium considered the potential of probiotics to revolutionize HIV prevention. With this new technology, lactobacilli are used to produce antiviral compound that would function as long-term, self-replicating delivery systems and combat reproductive tract infections. It explored implications for probiotic approaches and investigated a repeated low dose challenge model using a live lactobacillus microbicide. This symposium also discussed lessons from the microbicide field, the need to build support for probiotics in HIV prevention, and the regulatory requirements for developing this technology.
