Developing Live Biotherapeutics for HIV Prevention & MPTs

Developing Live Biotherapeutics for HIV Prevention & MPTs

As a follow up to our 2020 “Let’s Talk MPTs” webinar: The role of cervicovaginal microbiota on contraceptive and MPT development, this webinar in the “Let’s Talk MPTs” series focused on new developments and next steps in the vaginal microbiome field. Developing Live Biotherapeutics for HIV Prevention & MPTs featured expert speakers from the field including Douglas Kwon (Ragon Institute of MGH, MIT and Harvard), Jacques Ravel (University of Maryland), and Anke Hemmerling (University of California San Francisco).

Advances in analyses of the microbiome, metatranscriptome, metabolome and immune parameters may allow for a deeper understanding of what constitutes an optimal vaginal state. Additionally, these new techniques can aide the assessment of live biotherapeutics in clinical trials and facilitate a more targeted development based on data elucidating the underlying mechanism of action. Remaining challenges for the field include finding meaningful outcome measures for clinical trials suitable for comparison across studies, the definition of vaginal dysbiosis and cure in FDA guidance, and regulatory pathways.
