Contraceptive technology is failing to meet the needs of people in the United States because of underinvestment in new methods
This commentary makes the case for more investment in contraception. It starts by describing the needs and preferences of people in the United States for enhanced contraceptive options, a satisfaction with existing products, and the populations that are underserved by the existing options. The needs and preferences of U.S. populations are then compared to existing methods to highlight the major gaps in the current methods. We then describe the contraceptive research and development (R&D) system that should be filling those gaps and how this system will require substantially more investment to meet the needs and preferences of people in the United States.
