Happy Holidays from the IMPT Secretariat!
Published: August 6, 2014
Dear Friends,
As a budding public health researcher over 25 years ago, I had the privilege of living and working with young women and girls in Sub-Saharan Africa, many of whom were forced to leave school due to marriage and pregnancies at an early age, often as young as 13 years old. I saw firsthand how these young women and girls, many of whom became my friends, were unable to protect themselves from unintended pregnancies or diseases like HIV. When I returned to the U.S., I saw similar situations among women here.
This is what motivated me to do the work I still do today: advocating for new, more comprehensive prevention methods that meet the diverse realities of women throughout their lives. Multipurpose Prevention Technologies (MPTs) promise to put the power of simultaneous prevention in the hands of women and girls, empowering them to achieve their full potential. At the Initiative for MPTs (IMPT), we feel passionately that when women are healthy, they are better able to have healthy children and families.
Will you help us today by making a donation to help every woman have more control over her sexual and reproductive health? Today, nearly a dozen potential MPTs are in clinical trials—and the results look promising. MPTs have gained more widespread recognition among health leaders as part of a new World Health Organization strategy on STIs. And as IMPT Secretariat, we continue to shape the path forward for MPTs by providing a platform for collaboration and objective technical guidance.
As always, we depend on the support of MPT champions like you to advance our vision of a world where every woman and girl can reach her full potential. In order to make these lifesaving technologies a reality, we need you to spread the word about MPTs, contribute your unique expertise, and critically, provide financial support to the IMPT.
Your donation today will help to:
- Support the work of in-country task forces in Kenya, South Africa, Uganda, Zimbabwe, India, and China, who work to amplify the voices of the women and girls in need.
- Expand our task forces into areas within the United States that have urgent need for MPTs.
- Develop a more robust communications and advocacy strategy, aimed at educating key stakeholders about how important MPTs are for women’s sexual and reproductive health and rights.
The coming months promise more exciting developments for MPTs, and the IMPT Secretariat is well-positioned to lead the field toward impactful MPT products that are desirable, acceptable, and accessible to those who are most at need. Together with you, our many partners and supporters, we can ensure a healthier future women and their families worldwide.
Thank you once again for your consideration and support.
With warm wishes for a happy holiday season and New Year,
